Her modern style gave the Comédie Française a more youthful image and she garnered a strong following for her designs. Suzanne retired in 1970 and passed away on 16 April 1989. Suzanne Lalique, an artist celebrated and admired during her creative period, faded into near oblivion for several decades, because her works often remained in the shadow cast by those of her father, René Lalique. More recently, various monographs and exhibitions have shed light on the eclectic nature and depth of her talent. Suzanne has been rediscovered and her art can once again be appreciated by a wide audience.
In 1936, Suzanne’s life took a decisive turn. Édouard Bourdet, a playwright and close friend, had just been appointed director of the Comédie Française. One of Suzanne’s paintings, Dominos et jeux de cartes , was presented in the living room of his Quai d’Orsay apartment and Charles Dullin, who was then working on the staging for Pirandello’s Chacun sa vérité , found it very moving. He immediately decided that Suzanne should be the one to design the costumes and sets for his production. Thus began Suzanne’s scenic career. In 1939, she took over the direction of the costume and set design workshops for the theatre company.
