SPIRITS
“I had no idea then that it would be the start of a journey enriched by distilleries and those who worked there – my Still Life .” His tasting notes eloquently describe the blend he fashioned for that initial 105-bottle release: “Christmas cake, sweet honey and brandy snaps welcome you in from the cold. Soft oak with hints of vanilla visit later. Seasoned oak embraces rich and warm layers of fruit with winter spices – nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. Soft wood spices with fruit meander into the darkness.” It is easy to imagine snow swirling round the distillery buildings, with steam rising from the ancient still, as the master blender slowly sniffs the subtle aromas, then sips his vision of Still Life Winter . It is now time to unveil Spring , Still Life ’s second limited edition release. To interpret this next season, Dalgarno decided to celebrate the close relationship between farming and whisky crafting. Spring is a season of hope, with trees in blossom, grass turning green and the birth of new wildlife. “Due to our use of barley, I have always looked to spring as the start of a new distilling year”, he reminisces. “The ploughed fields wait for the warmth of the sunshine to allow the land to be worked and the barley to be sown. It is a season full of promise with the coming of lighter, brighter days. I have had an interest in farming since I was a boy, when I watched my father working the land on the family farm. My first job upon leaving school was on a local farm, where I learned to look after cattle, drive a tractor, plough, and sow barley. Little did I know what a big part that crop would play in my future career. For both farmer and distiller, the excitement is looking for the barley to ‘breer’, when the green shoots start to show, which gives an early indication of the current crop’s potential.” Premium whisky collectors around the globe eagerly awaiting this new release will discover a blend that Dalgarno likens to a daylong cycle: “Dried fruits and wood spices backdrop the cool dark of the morning. Hints of new green oak give touches of light. Soft vanilla provides warm tones as the day unfolds, ginger cake and citrus notes filter through to a fresh, crisp finish as the evening takes hold.” The Glenturret is a distillery where perfection is never rushed, achieved by slowly, patiently following time-honoured traditional methods, so there will naturally be a wait before its Whisky Maker finds the perfect blends to express his visions of summer and autumn. But when the series is complete, owners of these precious Lalique decanters will count themselves as privileged members of a select club.
